Jess Allen is an artist based in Cornwall, UK. Adopting paint as her primary medium she investigates simple everyday objects, such as boxes, books and paper bags. Working with the silence of looking, her still life paintings, reflect a slowing down of time. Each masterly created work encourages viewers to enjoy the power of appreciating the unnoticed and the understated.
Her work focuses on the quiet consideration of the overlooked, and the importance of spending time through looking with simple forms and space. For a number of years she has painted quiet simple still life’s of unremarkable objects such as cardboard boxes. Looking at the spaces within them, and around and between them. Embodying the Japanese aesthetic 'Ma' they reflect the importance of space; "an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled".
